What are Cellular Networks?

The boundaries between cellular networks and the Internet are blurring. Increasingly, and more so in the developing world, the "on ramp" to the Internet is a mobile device accessing the Internet via a cellular network that extends significantly beyond even the electric grid. The 3G cellular networks support broadband Internet, and with self-contained power, can be deployed in even the most remote locations. As the network expands, mobiles are increasingly the access point not only for common tools and communications, but also for information of all kinds, training materials, and more. Because of it is always connected, many people are beginning to look to mobile computing platforms as their device of choice. For this group, mobile computing devices are more affordable, more accessible, and easier to use than desktop computers, and provide more than enough functionality to serve as their primary computing device.

(1) How might this technology be relevant to the educational sector you know best?

  • Cellular networks can help enable field based learning opportunities outside of the classroom. - KeeneH KeeneH Oct 18, 2010
  • I completely agree with KeeneH. Recently I investigated the use of Internet for undergraduate dental students' community immersion programme. Students use blog as logbook and access Internet through their phones while they were in local communities. It was interesting how the whole thing went-digitizing treatment of patient online. The details of activities entered into the blog and the supervision they received from their consultants created a shift in the use of mobile phones in accessing internet for clinical learning on the field - Olufemi.Olubodun Olufemi.Olubodun Oct 19, 2010

(2) What themes are missing from the above description that you think are important?

  • Cellular networks need to be taken into more consideration as powerful enablers especially as they become more robust, pervasive and faster. - KeeneH KeeneH Oct 18, 2010

(3) What do you see as the potential impact of this technology on teaching, learning, or creative expression?

  • Cellular networks are the enabling technology that will allow students and teachers to better make use of mobile technologies outside of the classroom. As these become more robust the possibilities can become greater as more data can be transmitted on these networks. - KeeneH KeeneH Oct 18, 2010
